Our last event for our final day in Germany was a hike into the Berchtesgaden National Park to see the "Wimbachklamm" or "Waterfall Walk", one of the most beautiful hidden gems of Berchtesgaden. This valley runs alongside and below the Wimbach River; the river pours water through and over the rocks along the cliff wall, creating an amazingly beautiful spectacle. The water of the Wimbach River is pure and incredibly clear, and the overflow that churns along the valley floor is a gorgeous foam-capped blue. The wooden walkway built into the cliff on one side of the gorge was built by loggers who needed a path in and out of the gorge. The loggers stopped harvesting this area in 1843, and the bridge became a public attraction four years later.
You can see the grand scale of this beautiful valley when you see how small Savannah looks in this photo! |
This path is advertised as looking like a set from Lord of the Rings or The Chronicles of Narnia, so we were particularly eager to squeeze this in on our busy last day in Germany. To our great delight, the Wimbachklamm lived up to the claims in every possible way, and it was a beautiful place to visit. As an added treat, since we arrived at the Wimbachklamm at the close of a substantial rain storm, we had the entire place to ourselves. We wandered along in uninterrupted peace for well over an hour - what a relaxing end to our busy day! After having spent most of our time in Germany reviewing the history of WWII and the terrible crimes that had been committed there, it was good for us to see a place with this much peace and beauty in Germany.
Don't these look eerily like bugs? |
The water on the valley floor was moving incredibly fast. We really enjoyed being safely suspended just above something so powerful and beautiful! |
These are BEAUTIFUL pictures, girls. Great job! Wish I was there to see it all with you, but I love that I can live it vicariously through you! Hugs and love, Mom
